How to Choose Power Source for Heavy Duty Sludge Pump

Heavy duty sludge pump is one kind of slurry pump or sediment pump which can be used to extract river sediment, silt or tailing slag, etc. According to the structure,  sludge pump can be divided into three types  such as horizontal, vertical and submersible sludge pump. Some of our customers often have a question on how to choose suitable power source for sediment pump. Normally we choose the power source according to the actual working conditions. Electric motor, diesel engine and hydraulic power are three commonly used power resources to drive heavy duty sludge pump.

Electric Motor Driven Heavy Duty Sludge Pump

We recommend the electric motor as a power source for the heavy duty sludge pump when there is three-phase industrial power at the work site. . Especially in the case of transporting sludge or mud with long distances, it has the following advantages:
  1. With electric motor, the sludge pump has low noise and stable operation. Low noise has less impact on the surrounding environment and it is conducive to workers’ construction.
  2. The supporting variable frequency control cabinet controls the operation of the electric motor, sot he start-up is more stable. During the operation, the power can be reduced by adjusting the frequency to reduce the useless power consumption, it could meet the requirements of transportation distance, to save power consumption and reduce the construction electricity cost.
  3. The electric motor is also easy to maintain.
  4. The electric motor connection mode can be directly connected by the coupling and also connected by the pulley. The installation is flexible and the occupied space is also small.

If the work site have no electric power supply or needs to be equipped with more than 500 KW electric power, we recommend diesel engine as power source. Diesel engines have the following advantages.
  1. The diesel engine has the advantage of large torque, It is especially suitable for long-distance transportation and high concentration conditions.
  2. When selecting the diesel engine, the engine rotation speed will be calculated according to the requirements of the heavy duty sludge pump. When calculating the heavy duty sludge pump speed ratio, we usually leave a certain amount of allowance. If the heavy duty sludge pump needs to run at the speed which is higher than the designed speed, the diesel engine power also has a certain margin to ensure safe using.

Electric Sand Dredge Pump Used for Construction Mud Conveying

Electric sand dredge pump is also called heavy duty sand pump. Electric sand dredge pump is the kind of sediment pump for extracting mud, fine sand, and other media and transporting them over long distances. An engineering company in Zhejiang has undertaken a mud transportation project in the underground engineering. About 5 million cubic meters mud obtained from underground construction requires to be delivered to a place 12 kilometers away from the construction site.
The site is on a relatively congested section of the local traffic, so the government designate the construction period to be 22:30 – 7:00 the next day. It also requires less noise during construction, minimizing the dust pollution, and reducing the impact on the lives of surrounding residents.
The customer currently uses trucks to transport mud to a designated area for stacking. However, this method is less efficient. Trucks need continuous round-trip transportation and can only work at specified times in the evening, which results in lower transporting efficiency. And environmental pollution problems such as dust and spills cannot be avoided. The customer contacted our engineers through our website to inquire whether there were other transportation modes that can improve efficiency while reducing costs and pollution.

  1. Use multiple vertical sediment pumps equip with high-pressure water pumps.Water pumps extract clean water from the river. The water pump can provide high-pressure water to impact the soil layer, thereby forming high concentration mud and water mixture, which is pumped and transported by a vertical sand pump.
  2. The mud and water mixture extracted by vertical sand pumps was gathered to one electric sand dredge pump by mud transporting hose then is conveyed by electric sand dredge pump 3km away. There are other two electric sand dredge pumps as booster sand pump, the two sand pumps are in same model. The mixture will be conveyed and discharged to the river 12 km away by the booster pumps.

During the trial operation of the heavy duty sand pump units, the water and mud mixture capacity was about 400 cubic meters per hour which can meet the customer’s expectations. Centrifugal Portable Sand Pump Sent to South Africa for Sand Dredging

We chose 8 inch centrifugal portable sand pump which had thicker pump case, this could extend the wear resistance of the sand pumping machine. Considering the safety of the sand pump, we equipped a protective cover upside of the belt. Besides the centrifugal portable sand pump, we also discussed other details of the portable sand dredger with the customers. Why Mining Pumps Can’t be Used to Suck Sand?

Mining pumps are the widely used powerful sand, trash and water handling pumps for efficient dewatering and residue handling in mining industries. Mining pumps are often used to handle particle concentration less than 30% and they are not suitable for sand sucking and dredging. Some many users may select mine pump to suck sand, especially he user who just comes to sand pumping industry. Here are Several Reasons Why Do Mining Pumps Can’t Suck Sand

1.The air in the mining pumps case caused mining pumps can’t suck sand.
In August 2018, Our customer from Malaysia wanted to purchase our sand extraction pump. At first, he considered to put the sand extraction pump on the sand shore, it is about 20 meters away from the surface of the water, then put the rubber hose into water to pump sand. Our engineer didn’t agree with this scheme. We recommended using a jet suction dredger, putting the sand extraction pump in the jet suction dredger for pumping. Because of the air in the centrifugal sand pump case may cause the mining pumps can not suck sand.
The design principle of the mining pumps is when pump is filled with liquid, the centrifugal force is formed by the high speed rotation of the impeller, so that the water is continuously sucked from the sand suction pipe. Almost everyone knows this principle, but when choosing the mining pumps, people often ignore the vacuum suction of the mining pumps. Then vacuum suction of the normal sand pump is about 6 meters, that means when the pump is 6 meters higher than water surface, the mining pump can not suck out the water, and the proportion of the sand is larger. So if the height exceeds 2-3 metiers, the effect of the sand pumping will be greatly reduced. Therefore, in the usual selection, the engineer always advise the user to put the mining pumps in the dredger or on the welding platform, so that the vertical height from water surface to centrifugal inlet is smaller. Moreover, if there is air in the sand pumping machine during work, cavitation will occur and the wear of the pump will increase.

  1. Sand quality will affect sand pumping
The mining pumps are based on the foundation of the water pump. The difference between the mining pumps and water pumps is that the mining pump impeller has a wider flow path and better passability. The overflow parts are usually made of wear-resistant materials to ensure the life of sand pumping. But the basic principle is to suck the water and sand out by centrifugal force.
Since some construction sites are perennial sediments, some will have a knot. Therefore, it is necessary to impact the sediment by means of injection. How to achieve injection? It requires a set of high-pressure water gun. Using high-pressure water to disperse the sediment at the bottom of the river, increasing the concentration of the suction, and ensuring the amount of sand. If the sand is knotted for many years and the high-pressure water can’t disperse the sediment, you can use the types of cutter suction or bucket wheel. Using a reamer or bucket wheel to stir the sediment into the water to achieve high concentration.

After the long-term continuous operation of the mining pump impeller, there will be wear, or the gap between impeller and the front plate of the sand pump will be too large, resulting in a decrease in suction force, which will affect the amount of sand discharged; the mining pumps bearing is damaged, the mining pumps vibration is too large, causing the impeller to be eccentric, which also cause the suction to be affected. At this time, it is necessary to replace the overflow components or bearings.

There exist power matching, pipeline matching, valve matching issues. The power matching is reflected in the diesel engine or the motor is too small, the power is insufficient, resulting in a problem with the load of the sand pumping machine, which causes the equipment to stop or malfunction; the pipeline is reflected in the leakage of the suction pipe, and the wear of the gasket causes the sand pipe to leak. It will affect the suction of the pumping equipment; the valve is mainly reflected in the excessive density of the bottom valve, the sand can not enter the sand pumping tube, thus affecting the efficiency of sanding.
