Sand mining in Jiaxing city was under control by the Government because of environmental protection. But they needed the material of sand and gravel for construction, so they required to buy and transport the sand from other places to the local area. They planed to use conveying belt or small sand pump for sand unloading, but this method was low in efficiency, the conveying distance was short, the equipment damage time was short, and the cost was high. According to the customers’ requirements and actual measurement of the sand transport ship, the technical team of Tai’an Ocean Pump Co.,Ltd.(referred to as Ocean Pump) recommended horizontal sand pump 350PNS-35 for sand unloading.
On April 10, 2018, Jiaxing customers came to Ocean Pump and proposed construction requirements, the speed of unloading sand should be fast, 6-barrel water guns, and the conveying distance ranged from 600m to 1300m. The engineers of Ocean Pump showed the customers the sand unloading plan, that was, to make a new ship, 350PNS-35 horizontal sand pump and 350s44 high pressure water pump were arranged in the ship hull, and the hydraulic operation rod was used to move the high pressure water gun and sand suction hose, then realized the sand unloading work. This method was a sand unloading plan jointly developed by Ocean Pump, and Yancheng and Xinghua Shipyard. It has been successfully promoted and operated for a long time in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Huangpu River area.
The customer was very appreciative of this scheme, but they worried about this would increase the cost and delay the construction period. They hoped to realize sand unloading on the dock. Through the construction simulation of the work site, the technical department of Ocean Pump proposed a plan to place a horizontal sand pump on the dock and use the artificial hand-held high-pressure water gun to impact the sand. However, there were several important points to be noted in the operation:
- The height of the horizontal sand pump should not be too high. The vacuum suction head of the sand dredging pump was limited, if the height was too high, the first was to affect the suction and the production cannot be guaranteed. The second was the cavitation phenomenon, this could cause the horizontal sand pump to be worn so fast; the third was to reduce the head, there was air in the sand suction pump body and the pipeline, so that the resistance was increased and the conveying distance was shortened. It was therefore recommended to achieve backflow or parallel water level.
- If the conditions in the work site were limited, the place of sand pump machine cannot be lower than the water level, the sand suction pump still could run if it was 2-3m higher than the water level, the premise was injecting water into the sand pump body before turning on. There were two ways to inject water. The first was setting a bottom valve on the suction hose of the horizontal sand pump, turning on the sand and slurry pump after injecting water. The disadvantage was that the bottom valve was seriously worn, the inner rubber pad needed to be replaced frequently. The second was using vacuum pump, which could evacuate the sand pump and pipeline, the suction port position was vacuumed, and the liquid was filled with the horizontal sand pump and the suction pipe. The second solution needed to set a gate valve at the exit, which was relatively simple to operate.
- When equipped with power and pipeline, it was necessary to consider the actual conditions of the working site. The rated power of the 350PNS-35 horizontal sand pump was 200kw, but considering the high concentration sand unloading and long discharge distance, the engineer recommended that the motor was 8 poles, 220kw. Either 315mm or 377mm of pipeline was suitable, the customers could select according to their budget.
After the pre-communication, the customer selected the scheme of 350PNS-35 horizontal sand pump with SK-0.2/2.2kw vacuum pump. This type of sand pump was sufficient in stock, so the sand pumping equipment was quickly assembled and delivered to the work site.
